HYGIENE: A large part of his job is being pretty and appealing, and thus he keeps a tidy appearance, keeps himself clean, and makes certain he always smells pleasant. It's easier to hide poison under sweet perfume than most might assume.
HAIR: A long, wavy blonde often held away from his face with braids or bound in a longer tail at his nape, it reaches just between his shoulder blades when loose.
EYES: Copper or amber depending upon the light. In the dark they shine much like a cat's.
DEFINING MARKS: Extensive tattoos all over his body (yes even there), pointy elf ears, a multitude of subtle scars that are slightly paler than his tan skin tone, a glowing green mark in his left hand, almost always in boots.
ACCENT/SPEECH: A luscious, wry, rolling baritone with a lilting Antivan Accent that is very similar to an Earth's Southern Italian Accent, butting up against Spanish.
BEARING/DEMEANOR: Zev holds himself carefully, shoulders sloped, chin tipped down, it could be mistaken for demure. A desire to be seen as small and harmless. But when he is comfortable? He is alert, shoulders back, chin up, sultry and fluid in his manner, holding himself as an open invitation for attention. His eartips are the best tell for his emotional state, tiltig a few degrees upward or downward depending.
GAIT: Silent and smooth, unhurried, almost lazy if not on the prowl.

Habits

Speaks with his hands more oftn than not, and gives most people a good twice over. Once from head to toe to establish how much of a threat they are and a second to gauge how attractive they are. He tends to rock back upon his heels to buy himself a few more inches of space when in close conversation, and holds himself with a back to the wall, always with a line of escape available to him. When bored he will roll a coin across his knuckles, or flip his dagger around his hand idly.

Zev is skilled in combat and conversation, in the kitchen and the bedroom, he has a talented voice and magical hands, a sharp wit and a somewhat optimistically pragmatic outlook on life.

JOINING THE GUILD

SO YOU WISH TO BE AN ASSASSIN? It is no easy task, this, but for those with the desire to be paid for killing and the skill to do so well? It can be managed. Should you wish something more than mere mercenary work? To have training, tools, and a safe house beyond compare? This is where you ought to inquire. My Kestrels and I hope to do away with some of the less savory aspects of being a guilded member of an Assassin House- there is no competition, there is no penalty for failure save perhaps not being paid as one might be in any other profession for not getting the job done, and there is no indentured servitude. Work as you wish, with whom you wish, as long as you wish. Should you desire to depart after your time with us? You are welcome to do so!

What makes the Kestrels unique in Thedas is the true concept of brotherhood we employ. We help one another succeed in our contracts and therefore perform our jobs quickly, effectively, and cleanly. When the job is done and done well? We are all paid handsomely for it.

BY WHAT RULES DO THE KESTRELS ABIDE? These things are simple enough:

➣ Do not kill the innocent.

➣ Be unseen.

➣ Remain loyal to the House.

We do not kill without reason, we do not attract attention, and we do not betray our brothers. We do what must be done to see the mark killed, but we do not act out of order, we do not risk our companions, we do not risk ourselves. To be an Assassin is to move in shadow, to blend in, to be invisible until the moment comes to strike and to vanish once the deed is done. We are not branded as Kestrels by anything more than our actions- we are not branded at all. We wear the armor of our House, wield its blades, use its techniques, stand among our brothers. We do not rat one another out, we do not leave a man behind. If caught- the full weight of the House will fall upon those that thought it wise to capture one of our own. If killed (which should not happen as we are very careful and plan accordingly, but if), the fallen Kestrel's family (should they have any) shall be provided with their wages and coin enough to cover the funeral. Also they shall be avenged. Mercilessly. We stand together in this.

That is what marks us as Kestrels.

That and a lovely retirement package: a pleasant sum of gold and an outstanding contract on anyone that would attempt to, instead, take a contract on your head. Let it never be said we do not take care of our own! It is a dark and bloody business, assassinations, but there is no reason to not be personable about it. You travel to fascinating places, meet interesting people, kill them, and then you are paid for it! Marvelous fun.

WHAT DOES IT TAKE TO BE A KESTREL? Aside from a desire to kill people for money, discretion, and a sense of loyalty? Skill! We can and shall train up those that are uninitiated in the ways of stealth and murder, but we do have a few preferences:

➣ An aptitude for stealth and the dexterous handling of blades.

➣ The ability to work well in a pair, trio, or team.

➣ One that is able to stick to a plan or improvise as needed.

➣ Multilingualism! It is preferred but not required and likewise can be taught.

➣ Literacy- this too can be taught! There is no shame in not knowing.

➣ That you be in good health and of sound body and mind.

➣ That you are not squeamish about death and killing.

➣ That you do not judge your fellow Kestrels for how they cope.

➣ Should you be religious, that you practice in private unless asked otherwise.
(We do try to observe holy days as specified)

This is a non-exhaustive list, but it is some of the things we hold above all other qualifications. Much can be taught! But the desire to learn, to work well with one's fellows, to be discreet? This is of the highest import. Also a sense of humor- one cannot take oneself too seriously when one's job includes death for coin. Rogues will do best in our training but we always have room in our ranks for Warriors and Mages. There is a place for anyone of a mind in the Kestrels.

Alistair is solidly on his side of the border, though were he to ever change his mind, Zevran has called dibs.

There is no need for an act or for a mask and they share quiet company.

And occasionally, each other's beds, though thusfar it's only been at the hands of Isabela that such a thing has come to pass.

So fair and fine a thing he did not expect to find when searching for a source of traps- and find Cyril he did. Something in the Dalish beauty reminds Zevran of a porcelain shell wrapped around a core of lead. Fine, seemingly delicate and a bit of bauble, but with a surprising weight and strength to it one would not expect. Spending a night ravishing him was probably the best way to break in his new home- a bed is so much more comfortable after it's been laid in after all. Cyril is a playful, dependable source of comfort and pleasure when they are both of a mind. Whatever reservations Zevran had, however temporary, have been resolved.

Here he cannot quite choose what he admires most. The voice? The eyes? How expressive he is in bed? All of the above and more, please.

There are many things to enjoy of Orlais- the wine, the women, the men. The way the Nobility and the Chevaliers treat elves? Less so. As an Antivan before all else Zevran allows such things to roll off his back, but in Michel Zevran has found, perhaps, an opportunity to turn the tables on the institution. Disgraced or not, winding this handsome man around his fingers and leaving him desperate? Has an appeal. That somewhere along the line Michel has hooked his own fingers into a place Zevran thought long shut? Should be distressing. That he is not distressed- well. That bears worrying.

A fine figure with deft hands, quick eyes, and a wicked mouth. Fate is everything in himself that Zevran enjoys with none of the unfortunate flaws. That he made no attempt to treat him differently after saving him from the Crows, after seeing what was done to him- Zevran is endlessly grateful for the normalcy Fate offers.

Surprisingly enough that is all she desires and, again, Zevran is pleased to be of service.

It has been too long since he could have anything half as easy and light as this. She has attempted to point out the importance of having deeper relationships and while Zevran appreciates the concern- he is fine. Mostly.

Though fairly certain she could break him were he to offend her, Zevran finds Korrin enthralling in so many ways. Her practicality speaks well of her and he must admire her distinct inability to give a shit about people she finds insufferable. It's enticing. They have had their fun, watching the progression of her relationship with Araceli? So much more amusing. He has come to see her as an anchor since his rescue from the Crows- no matter what comes to pass? He knows she will be there for him. It's novel.

Cute is the word that comes to mind here. Eager. Young, easily, but not so much that it feels strange to Zevran. Lithe and well built in the way of most Dalish- Gavin is terribly sweet and twice as endearing, though somewhat clumsy at times. It did make the lovemaking more fun and less serious- something playful which he has missed in his dalliances of the past few years. Gavin is light and easy, and that in and of itself is more than enough for Zevran. He is terribly young at times and Zevran sincerely wonders how it is that he yet lives- but charming enough that his strangeness can be forgiven. There's a camaraderie there Zevran isn't accustomed to but...could learn to like.

With the settling of Gavin's relationship with Maxwell, Zevran has set aside the bulk of their flirtations in favor of an easy association.

The somber and dutiful tend to be quite beautiful, Pel's bearing is almost regal to Zevran, a quiet, unassuming grace that seems more at home in a lady of court than in a Dalish maiden wandering about the Inquisition. That she is so estranged from kindness has some small part of him aching for her, she seems to wish him to be a dream for her. An illusion of the perfect lover and as always, Zevran is happy to oblige. Especially if it grants him more of that unassuming sweetness.

They had their shared fantasy and spent a marvelous night together- but she has stepped into a path with a better man. In the interest of limiting complications, Zevran has stepped aside. Even after that has come to an end he's more content with her as a friend than playing the fantasy any longer- it's comfortable. Safe.

Merrill is...strange to Zevran. She is sweet and kind and hardworking and naive and something about that makes him want to keep her from getting into trouble- not exactly a sentiment he is accustomed to in the slightest. But she is at the same time playful, deeply compassionate, and quite capable with her magics. Simply because she is kind and cares does not make a child of her. Teasing her is fun- especially when she teases him back. They read smutty literature together while spoiling their dogs. Not the strangest way he's handled his flirtations- and one he enjoys.

Ah, the broad shoulders of a smith and talented fingers of a mage, what more could an elf ask for? Sam is a little on the 'fresh from the circle' side, leading to a few hiccups in his conversations with Zevran, but it's all taken in stride. Hard to keep a grudge against someone with puppy dog eyes and is so very determined to do the right thing. Also: Tall. Every tall. Nice warm, large hands. Things with Sam and Krem seem to be progressing nicely- but the teasing continues all the same. He is, after all, a helper.

Ah, the broad shoulders of a smith and talented fingers of a mage, what more could an elf ask for? Sam is a little on the 'fresh from the circle' side, leading to a few hiccups in his conversations with Zevran, but it's all taken in stride. Hugging: Oh yes do! He loves the hugging, especially from busty women. Or handsome men. So long as he does not loathe you he will roll with it well enough, though he may try to sneak in a grope. Or pick your pocket. It depends.

Kissing: Oddly, he's much more open to random kissing than he is to hugging. Perhaps because it's harder to kill someone with your eyes closed and your face up against theirs. Well. For the untrained individual. Kiss away- but he'll take it as a sign you're open to more than you might bargain for.

Flirting: It is his favorite pastime, and is very rarely sincere- but he enjoys finding reactions and should anyone flirt with him he will respond in kind.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES: Scarring on the right side of his face over his scarred, milky white eye. Antivan Accent, extensive tattoos all over his body (yes even there), pointy elf ears, a multitude of subtle scars that are slightly paler than his tan skin tone, almost always in boots.

Status

Mostly recovered from his run in with the Crows. Spends his days training, teaching, or relaxing in a quiet corner to sketch and drink wine. Evenings are reserved for the tavern. Most often he can be seen spending time with his Kestrels that he has taken in from the Crows, training them or teaching them now to not be Crows, but be people. He still continues his lessons in Roguery with other rogues that need the training in the Courtyard.

Reputation

Saved Ferelden with Alistair and the Warden and the whole of their merry little band, is responsible for quite a few assassinations of the Antivan Crow Masters and Grandmasters over the past decade, enough to earn the title of 'Black Shadow'. They aren't all that creative, the Crows. Known for his skill with the blades and his skill in bed (maybe more the latter than the former) Zev's been bouncing around Thedas enough for word to get around that he is an elf that gets the job done at a reasonable price.

Hooks

If you want someone killed, he's your elf. Or if you want to avoid being killed he is also available as a bodyguard, if he likes you he can be coaxed into sharing his techniques. Fellow assassins or Crows are welcome to seek him out for a fight, a roll in the hay, or a bit of perspective on working as a free agent. He is beginning to build the bones of his own house of Assassins in the Inquisition.

History

After the end of the Fifth Blight Zevran returned to Antiva for a few preemptive assassinations, targeting first the Grandmaster of House Arainai. Over the next three years four other Masters and Grandmasters were killed with all the techniques of a Crow but no formal contract, as Zevran was doing this for himself rather than for coin. After having cut down the House Arainai into relative obscurity other suspicious Grandmasters took steps against him in the Free Marches, attempting to have Hawke capture him for them as they've failed to manage it on their own.

A conversation (and threesome with Isabella) later and Zevran went about his business, operating independently with the occasional assassination of a Crow Master or Grandmaster. He has built a business for himself and has kept to Antiva in his quest to dismantle the Crows little by little; the unrest caused by the Mage-Templar war and the Orlesian Civil war offers him many contracts that he takes now and again. Until the events of Inquisition he passes his days with these jobs and various other adventures that may or may not include: Orgies, dwarves drowned in wine, exploding vases, oiled nude wrestling, repaying gambling debt with silk stockings, riding a dragon (it may be a lie, he won't tell), ordering more armor from Wade and Herren, and a pie eating contest.

Personality

Zevran is a pragmatic optimist. Life is short when one is in the business of murder; and it is better to plan enough to survive but improvise as needed. Especially if that finds him a lovely woman or a handsome man. His salacious and blunt nature is partly due to his childhood spent in a whorehouse, and partly due to his seduction training. Also: it's plenty of fun, so why not?

While he doesn't discuss his emotions freely or honestly, he makes no attempts to hide what he is. He kills for a living, he enjoys the work, and he sees no reason to lie about it. Suspicion is met with wit and flirtation, sometimes sincere but predominantly in the interest of making the other party uncomfortable. Questions are met with the same and sometimes as an exaggeration. If he plays the sultry fool no one thinks to ask more or dig deeper. If a question cannot be laughed off, mocked, or sidestepped, usually it is ignored.

Zevran doesn't judge people based on their less savory choices. Everyone makes them and odds are he has done worse himself and gotten paid for his trouble- they are not a measure of a man. Strength is the measure of a man, and it is not always a physical thing. Zevran admires strength and humor. It is fairly difficult to become someone he doesn't like; senseless violence or a pointless double-cross bother him. If someone stabs him in the back? He will not mind it- he'd rather remain alive but he can appreciate an artful betrayal. If they stab him in the back without a good reason, it irritates him. He believes that every choice should have a purpose. Death serves a purpose, pain and cruelty do not. Actions having a point mean a great deal to him as he was always considered to be expendable.

It plays a large part in why he left the Crows. And they keep trying to kill him for failing to kill the Warden, but. Ideological differences must count for something, yes? He'd come to have a stronger sense of duty and honor during the course of his travels with the Warden,they gave him a greater sense of compassion on a grander scale. He would always be an assassin but now he considers the long term implications of what this death or action might mean rather than buttoning it down to working one job at a time. As an independent operative he has mellowed some in the years, focusing on an almost surgical dismantling of the House Arainai and in part the Crows themselves. At first done for self defense or spite, it has become more of a point of pride. If the Crows were worth anything at all, they would have been able to stop him.

Strengths & Weaknesses

Antivan Crow - While no longer a Crow Zevran retains their techniques and training as well as picking up on a few new tricks in his decade away from the organization. A master of stealth, dual wielding, poisons, a high resistance to pain or other manners of torture, contortion and the Antivan equivalent of parkour (naked or dressed). He's become an even more skilled assassin in the past decade, enough to take out several of the Crows highest ranking members. He can get in and out without being noticed in most places because, frankly, elves can be considered interchangeable and invisible at times. It makes getting into some places more difficult (because elf) however.

Rogue - Being an assassin means being a sneaky bastard first. Zev can pick locks, pick pockets, detect & dismantle or build traps of various designs, create and resist a wide variety of poisons and venomous oils to be used on arrows or blades, detect or arrange an ambush with great skill, and fight dirty in every which way. He's also quite cunning and a skilled liar, able to coerce his allies into seeing things his way or bluff his enemies out of a fight, he's not as able to handle large groups of attackers on his lonesome easily. Having the mental clarity and patience to do so has come easier to him as he's gotten older but it's not his first choice.

Academic - Part of reading the political landscape of Antiva to make the most of assassinations is knowing how the cards will fall after a mark is dead. Either by the Crows or his own curiosity Zevran is knowledgeable in a great deal of the lore of Thedas's countries and it's people, including the Dalish from what little he remembers of his mother and outside observation. Of course he's not above bluffing to supplement what he already knows or taking a wild stab at what might be so. Being genre savvy offers him a bit of credibility even then.

Lothario - Getting a mark to bed you is an easy way to kill them afterward; a tactic Zev preferred in his youth and one he's not at all above using even now. He was trained and employed as the great seducer of his trio while they worked together, playing the honeypot with great abandon. Between his contortion and his increased stamina due to Crow training, as well as his bluffing and coercion abilities and the touch of an actor's soul, he could make himself whatever the mark most desired before murdering them. While his conquests usually no longer end in murder, the skills are useful when moving about in such dangerous times.

Marked for Death - The Crows are wise to him enough to have named him their 'Black Shadow' and are still hunting him lest he lead to their downfall. It makes working in Antiva problematic and traveling alone unwise.

Motivation

Where there is a group of potential political power, there will be a need for assassins. Either as an actual assassin or as a consultant, Zev means to lend his services because he quite likes Thedas intact.
